1. Define the Symptom Before Troubleshooting
“It stopped working” can mean no startup sound, weak amplification, muffled speech, distortion, crackling, one-sided streaming, short battery life, or sound that cuts out with movement. Each pattern points in a different direction.
Before changing anything, note the side, time, location, program, battery level, streaming status, recent moisture or impact, and whether unaided hearing also feels different. Compare in a quiet room with a familiar voice. Do not judge device function only in traffic, wind, or a crowded restaurant.
Urgent exception: If hearing itself changed suddenly—especially in one ear, with tinnitus or dizziness—seek prompt medical assessment instead of spending days troubleshooting the aid.
2. Check 1: Power, Charging, and Battery
For rechargeable aids, confirm the charger has power, the correct cable and adapter are connected, and charging indicators behave as the manual describes. Remove lint or visible debris from the case with the approved dry method. Seat each aid fully and compare left and right. A case battery may be empty even when the wall outlet works.
For disposable batteries, use the correct size and fresh packaging. Remove the zinc-air tab and allow the activation time stated by the manufacturer before insertion. Check polarity and make sure the battery door closes without force. A damaged door or battery contact can cause sound to cut out when the head moves.
- Do not charge a wet device.
- Do not use leaking, swollen, hot, or damaged batteries.
- Do not scrape charging contacts with metal.
- If battery life suddenly collapses, note streaming use, cold exposure, and device age, then request testing.
3. Checks 2–3: Blockage and Acoustic Parts
Check 2—blockage: Wax, skin debris, dust, or dried moisture can block a receiver outlet, wax guard, dome, earmold sound bore, vent, microphone cover, thin tube, or hook. Inspect under good light. Replace only the consumables approved for the exact device, and follow the manual so a wax guard is not doubled or left loose.
Check 3—acoustic parts and fit: Look for split or hardened tubing, a twisted receiver wire, a loose dome, cracked earmold, disconnected hook, shell damage, or a part seated at the wrong depth. If the problem begins when chewing, touching the wire, or turning the head, a connection or physical-fit issue is more likely.

Never use pins, needles, compressed air, solvents, or household glue. A dome or guard left in the ear canal requires professional removal.
4. Check 4: Moisture and Intermittent Contacts
Sweat, rain, condensation, bathroom steam, hair products, and rapid temperature changes can produce muffling or intermittent sound. Tubes may show visible droplets; microphones and receivers can hold moisture without obvious signs.
Turn the aid off, remove a disposable battery if the manual allows, wipe the exterior, and use the manufacturer-approved drying system. Let removable tubing or earmold parts dry exactly as instructed. Do not use a hair dryer, microwave, oven, heater, direct sun, rice, or alcohol.
If the aid was submerged, exposed to salt water, dropped hard, or becomes warm, do not repeatedly power-cycle or charge it. Arrange service. Intermittency that returns after every humid day suggests sealing, receiver, contact, or internal corrosion that home drying may not solve.
5. Check 5: Programs, Streaming, and Controls
An aid may be working but routed incorrectly. Confirm it is not muted, set to a telecoil or manual program, turned down, or sending sound only from a phone, television accessory, or remote microphone. Restart the aids and phone, then test ordinary microphone sound before re-pairing.
If only streamed audio is weak, check phone media volume, left-right balance, call routing, app permissions, and whether another device captured the connection. Avoid factory reset or deleting clinician programming unless instructed. Software updates can change compatibility; record the phone model, operating system, app version, and hearing-aid model before contacting support.
For paired aids, one side may reconnect later than the other. Charge both, restart them together as the manual describes, and keep them near the phone during pairing.
6. Check 6: Separate Ear Change from Device Failure
After the first five checks, compare how the ear feels without the aid. Fullness, pain, drainage, new tinnitus, dizziness, or muffled unaided hearing may indicate wax, middle-ear pressure, infection, or hearing change. The ear needs examination before programming is increased.
If the ear seems stable but the device remains weak, distorted, crackling, or intermittent, book a professional listening check and electroacoustic test. The provider can inspect microphones, receiver, amplifier, contacts, battery current, charger, and programmed output. Bring the charger, cable, phone, accessories, and a log of when the fault occurs.
Six-check summary: power, blockage, acoustic parts, moisture, routing/settings, then ear health versus hardware. Stop once a safety concern appears.
